Brest to miejscowość i gmina we Francja|Francji, w regionie Bretania, w departamencie Finistère.

Według danych na rok 1990 gminę zamieszkiwało 147 956 osób, a gęstość zaludnienia wynosiła 2,988 osób/km² (wśród 1269 gmin Bretania|Bretanii Brest plasuje się na 2. miejscu pod względem liczby ludności, natomiast pod względem powierzchni na miejscu 81.).

Miasto

Brest jest miastem w północno-zachodniej, nad Ocean Atlantycki|Oceanem Atlantyckim, liczacym 150 tys. (1999) mieszkańców. Największy port morski|port wojenny Francja|Francji (baza francuskich okrętów podwodnych o napędzie atomowym) oraz port handlowy. Występuje tutaj przemysł maszynowy, stoczniowy, elektroniczny, chemiczny, spożywczy oraz odzieżowy. Znajduję się tu cementownia i rafineria ropa naftowa|ropy naftowej (12 km od Brestu).

Brest jest miastem uniwersytet|uniwersyteckim, jest tu także wyższa szkoła morska, Bretoński Instytut Oceanologiczny oraz Instytut Eksploatacji Oceanów.

Miasto jest ośrodkiem turystycznym. Znajdują się tu muzeum|muzea: morskie oraz miejskie. Wśród ważniejszych zabytków są: zamek (XII wiek|XII, XIV wiek|XIV–XVI wiek|XVI w., z fragmentami rzymskimi z IV wiek|IV w.) oraz fortyfikacje (XVIII wiek|XVIII w.). W pobliżu Brestu znajduje się port lotniczy.

Historia

W starożytności miasto było portem rzymskim zwanym Gesocribate. Od 1239 należał do księstwo|księstwa Bretania|Bretanii, w latach 1342–1397 do Anglia|Anglii. Po włączeniu Bretania|Bretanii do Francja|Francji, Brest nabrał znaczenia jako port wojenny, rozbudowany w XVII w. (w 1683 rozpoczęcie fortyfikacji przez Sebastian Vauban|Sebastiana Vaubana).
