Hydra Lernejska to w mitologia grecka|mitologii greckiej wielogłowy wąż wodny, spłodzony przez Tyfona i Echidna|Echidnę. Hydra podobna była do psa, lecz miała 8 lub 9 wężowych łbów. Jeden ze łbów Hydry był nieśmiertelny. Według innych wersji, Hydra miała nawet 50 lub 100 głów. Na miejscu odciętej odrastały dwie lub trzy nowe głowy. Hydra była bardzo jadowita, a nawet zapach jej śladów miał powodować śmierć. Potwór, który norę miał u źródła rzeki Amymone, pustoszył okolice Lerny, która leżała w okolicach Argos.
Zgładzenie Hydry było Dwanaście prac Heraklesa|drugą pracą, którą Herakles (Herkules) musiał wykonać dla króla Eurysteusa. Herakles wywabił Hydrę z nory za pomocą płonących strzał, a następnie wstrzymał oddech i ją schwytał. Potwór z kolei usiłował owinąć mu się naokoło nóg. Herakles rozbijał głowy Hydry pałką, lecz wówczas na tym miejscu wyrastały nowe głowy. W końcu skorzystał z pomocy swojego siostrzeńca Jolaosa, który przypalał miejsca po odciętych głowach, zapobiegając wyrastaniu nowych. Potem Herakles odciął mieczem nieśmiertelną głowę i zakopał pod głazem.
W żółci zabitej Hydry Herakles zanurzył groty strzał, zatruwając je w ten sposób i powodując, że nawet ich draśnięcia były śmiertelne. Stało się to jednak pośrednio przyczyną jego śmierci (zobacz: Dejanira).
Eurysteus nie zaliczył jednak tej pracy jako wykonanej, gdyż Herakles korzystał z pomocy Jolaosa, przez co heros musiał wykonać pracę dodatkową.
