Chester, stolica hrabstwa Cheshire oraz dystryktu Chester w północno-zachodniej części Anglia|Anglii, w pobliżu granicy z Walia|Walią, nad rzeką Dee. Liczy 103 312 mieszkańców (2001).
Historia
Miasto Chester zostało założone przez Cesarstwo rzymskie|rzymian około 2000 lat temu. Było znane jako Deva lub Castra Devana i stanowiło bazę zaopatrzeniową dla wojsk Rzym|Rzymu stacjonujących w okolicy. Po upadku cesarstwa zostało przejściowo opanowane przez Celtowie|Celtów, a następnie znalazło się pod kontrolą Anglowie|Anglów i Sasów.
W 1066 roku, po inwazji normańskiej, wybudowano w mieście zamek i katedrę. Oba budynki można oglądać do 2006|dziś.
Zamek w Chester był również wykorzystywany jako twierdza do obrony przed Dania|duńską inwazją. Jako ostatnia twierdza Sasi|Sasów, padł po kilkumiesięcznym oblężeniu.
Przez resztę średniowiecza Chester nie odegrało większej roli w historii. Dopiero w latach 40. XVII wieku, podczas wojna domowa w Anglii|wojny domowej siły rojaliści|rojalistów zostały rozbite przez zwolenników monarchii parlamentarnych (bitwa pod Rowton Moor). Bitwę obserwował król Karol I (król Anglii i Szkocji)|Karol I z wieży Feniksa, od tamtej pory nazywanej wieżą króla Karola.

Chester jest doskonale dostępne zarówno z morza (Morze Irlandzkie) jak i lądu. Dogodne połączenia kolejowe wiążą miasto z Leeds, Liverpool|Liverpoolem, Manchester|Manchesterem, Swansea a także mniejszymi miasto|miastami północnej Walia|Walii. Do Londyn|stolicy Zjednoczonego Królestwa łatwo dostaniemy się zarówno pociągiem, jak i autobusem czy statkiem. Bliskość dużych aglomeracji sprawia, że Chester jest dogodnie usytuowane pod względem komunikacyjnym.
