Manchester - miasto w zachodniej Anglia|Anglii, na obszarze metropolitalnym Wielki Manchester (Greater Manchester).
Manchester jest położony u podnóża Gór Pennińskich, nad rzeką Irwell. Jest to jeden z najważniejszych ośrodków przemysłowych Anglii. Ważne centrum życia kulturalnego i naukowego. Po Londynie Manchester jest drugim co do wielkości centrum handlowym Wielkiej Brytanii.
Liczba mieszkańców: 449 tys.; zespół miejski (pokrywający się z obszarem Wielkiego Manchesteru i obejmujący m.in. m.: Bury, Salford, Bolton) liczy 2,5 mln mieszkańców (2004), w tym ok. 1,2 mln pracujących; ponad 2 mln mieszkańców żyje w promieniu 10 mil (16 km) od centrum miasta, ponad 5 mln w promieniu 30 mil (48 km).
Historia
W 79 roku powstała rzymska warownia, która istniała do V wieku. W roku 1086 Manchester został założony niedaleko dawnej twierdzy rzymskiej o nazwie Mamucium lub Mancunium. Aż do roku 1838 (mimo karty przywilejów z 1301 roku) traktowany administracyjnie jako wieś. Od połowy XVIII w. jeden z ośrodków rewolucja przemysłowa|rewolucji przemysłowej, ośrodek przemysłu włókienniczego, w XIX wieku największy na świecie. Wtedy nastąpił gwałtowny rozwój miasta jako centrum nowoczesnego przemysłu. Tu w 1789 roku uruchomiono pierwszą maszynę parową do napędu przędzalni.
Obecnie wielkie centrum przemysłu włókienniczego, maszynowego, elektrotechnicznego, samochodowego, lotniczego, papierniczego i odzieżowego. Port morski, połączony Kanałem Manchesterskim z Morze Irlandzkie|Morzem Irlandzkim. Port lotniczy Ringway. Silny ośrodek naukowy (University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University) i sławne obserwatorium radioastronomia|radioastronomiczne Jodrell Bank (16 mil na południe od Manchesteru); jest też od 1970 r. politechnika i inne szkoły wyższe, wśród nich Manchester Business School; także liczne instytuty naukowe; w roku 2004 łącznie ok. 50 000 studentów). Drugi po Londyn|Londynie co do wagi ośrodek medialny.
Od 1857 roku siedziba The Hallé Orchestra, najstarszej w Anglii stałej orkiestry symfonicznej.
